A Good Investment

A few months ago, an illness forced me to fast for the better part of a week, and I felt genuine, work-halting pain due to hunger. It’s embarrassing, really, how accustomed I am to having whatever food I want in whatever quantity easily accessible at any time.
If you’re reading this, odds are very high that you have plenty to eat and some disposable income. And if you’re in the United States, odds are decent that you have too much to eat: Americans spend billions each year on weight loss programs.
Consider skipping a meal once a week, and giving the money you would have spent to an organization fighting hunger or poverty:
- The UN World Food Programme responds to emergencies but also works to prevent hunger in the future.
- The International Committee of the Red Cross offers humanitarian assistance to victims of war and violence.
- Oxfam International fights poverty and injustice through long-term development programs and offers emergency assistance and advocacy.
- charity : water brings clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations. [Thanks to Daniel H. for the tip.]
A little help for the neediest members of human society is an investment with a huge expected rate of return.
